Quick answer

Colorado's aspens are running about a week early in 2026 because of drought, so the highest passes are at or past peak by late September, while groves below about 8,500 feet keep coloring into October. The closest classic drives from Denver are the Mount Blue Sky and Echo Lake loop (about 88–108 miles round trip), the Guanella Pass loop (about 124) and Kenosha Pass (about 126). All eight drives below are under about 280 miles round trip, and the six shortest fit on one charge for most EVs rated at 250 miles or more. Charge before the climb; regenerative braking wins much of it back on the way down.

Updated Sept. 29, 2026. Colors change week to week, so check local reports before you go.

Fall is the best time of year to drive in Colorado, and one of the best times to test what a car can do. We mapped eight classic aspen drives from downtown Denver and ranked them by round-trip miles, with the highest elevation, the 2026 road dates and a charging stop for each. Gas or electric, AWD or not, here's how to plan the trip.

Key takeaways

2026 colors are about a week ahead of schedule; go high early and low late.
Mount Blue Sky requires a timed reservation through Oct. 4, and Rocky Mountain National Park through Oct. 13.
Trail Ridge Road usually closes in mid- to late October; Independence Pass in late October or early November.
EVs use more energy climbing but recover a lot descending. Start full and charge in the gateway town.

How the mountains affect EV range

Climbing takes a lot of energy, and your range estimate will drop fast on the way up. The good news is that regenerative braking recovers much of it on the way down. In one real-world test, an Ioniq 5 used 118 miles of predicted range on a 74-mile climb to Loveland Pass, but averaged 3.7 miles per kWh over the full round trip. Colorado's own EV byways guide keeps it simple: start with a full charge and charge before the climb.

What a mountain drive does to EV efficiency

Miles per kWh
On the 74-mile climb2.2 mi/kWh
Used 118 miles of predicted range
Full 149-mile round trip3.7 mi/kWh
Finished with 46% battery left

Cold mornings count too

EVs keep about 78% of their range at 32°F on average, according to Recurrent.
Regenerative braking can be limited until a cold battery warms up.
Precondition the cabin while plugged in before you leave.
Use seat and steering-wheel heat instead of blasting the cabin heater.

Before you go

Check reservations. Mount Blue Sky needs a Recreation.gov timed pass through Oct. 4, and Rocky Mountain National Park requires timed entry through Oct. 13.
Check the roads. Early snow can close high passes. Use COtrip.org or the COtrip Planner app, and remember the Traction Law has been in effect on I-70 since Sept. 1. Read our Traction Law guide.
Go early or on a weekday. Kenosha, Guanella and the Bear Lake corridor fill up on peak weekends.
Charge or fuel in the gateway town. Idaho Springs, Georgetown, Breckenridge, Estes Park and Leadville all have fast charging.
Park legally and stay on trails. Don't pull onto fragile roadside meadows for photos.
