Colorado rules
AWD, 4WD and Colorado's Traction Law
Colorado's Traction Law is in effect every Sept. 1 through May 31 on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison, and CDOT can turn it on for other state highways during storms. A 2025 law (SB25-069) removed the tire-only option for 2WD vehicles, so AWD or 4WD with good tires is now the simplest way to comply.

Do I need AWD in Denver?
Not for most city driving, but it helps on snowy days and in the mountains. On I-70 from Sept. 1 to May 31, AWD or 4WD with qualifying tires is the easiest way to meet Colorado's Traction Law, because 2WD vehicles now need chains or a traction device.
Does AWD meet Colorado's Traction Law?
Yes, if the tires have at least 3/16-inch tread and are rated M+S, all-weather or winter. AWD with worn or summer tires does not comply.
What's the difference between AWD and 4WD?
AWD sends power to all four wheels automatically and is common on cars, crossovers and EVs. 4WD is typical on trucks and off-road SUVs and usually includes a low range for steep, slow driving.
Are electric vehicles good in the snow?
Many EVs we sell are dual-motor AWD, and their weight sits low in the battery. As with any vehicle, tires matter most, and cold weather reduces EV range, so plan charging for winter trips.
What tires should I get for a Colorado winter?
For regular mountain driving, winter tires with the mountain-snowflake symbol stop far shorter on snow. CDOT measured 310 feet from 60 mph on winter tires versus 669 feet on all-season tires.
