Which used Atlas is right for you?
The biggest dividing line is 2024. Earlier Atlases offer the smooth 3.6L VR6, which tows 5,000 lb with the factory hitch. 2024 and newer models use only a 269-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that tows 5,000 lb on most trims and comes with a far newer interior and more standard driver assistance.

What is the best year for a used Volkswagen Atlas?
It depends on your priorities. 2024 and newer models have the updated interior, standard IQ.DRIVE and IIHS Top Safety Pick+ or Top Safety Pick awards. 2021.5–2023 models offer the refreshed styling and the choice of the VR6, which tows 5,000 lb with the factory hitch.
Should I get the 2.0T or the VR6?
The 2.0T is rated a bit higher for fuel economy (about 22 mpg combined vs. 18–19 for the VR6 4Motion). Before 2024, only the VR6 was rated to tow 5,000 lb. From 2024, the 269-hp 2.0T is the only engine and tows 5,000 lb on most trims.
Does the Volkswagen Atlas have a third row?
Yes. The Atlas seats 7, or 6 with second-row captain's chairs. The Atlas Cross Sport is the two-row, five-seat version.
How much can a used Atlas tow?
Up to 5,000 lb when properly equipped: 2018–2023 VR6 models with the factory hitch and most 2024-and-newer 2.0T models. Earlier 2.0T models and the 2024+ base SE are rated at 2,000 lb.
What's the difference between the Atlas and the Atlas Cross Sport?
The Atlas has three rows and 20.6 cubic feet behind the third row. The Cross Sport has two rows, a sloped roofline and 40.3 cubic feet behind the second row.
Is a certified pre-owned Atlas worth it?
For many buyers, yes. Volkswagen CPO adds 2 years or 24,000 miles of limited warranty coverage after the new vehicle warranty ends, plus 2 years of roadside assistance. Six of our ten used Atlas SUVs were certified on Sept. 29, 2026.
